The Bike Bus

A bike bus is an organized group of students who ride their bicycles to school together along a set route. Functioning just like a traditional school bus, it operates on a fixed schedule with designated meeting points and is led and supervised by adult volunteers or parents.

What

SRE’s First Inaugural Bike Bus

When

Friday, June 5th

Where

Starting point is 2002 Feliz Rd, leaving promptly at 8:10am

Why

  • Safety in Numbers: Riding in a large, visible pack makes children more noticeable to drivers, creating a safer environment than a child riding alone.
  • Community & Fun: It turns the morning commute into a social event, often featuring music and a joyful atmosphere that avoids the dreaded school car line.
  • Health & Environment: It promotes physical activity for kids while cutting down on morning traffic congestion and emissions around school zones.
The map details the initial route planned for the San Ramon bike-bus scheduled for June 5th with corresponding bike-bus “stops” and approximate times for student riders to join. Click or touch the map below for details including the first bike-bus stop at 2002 Feliz Rd, which departs at 8:10 am. We plan to arrive at San Ramon Elementary at 8:20 am. Please note, we recognize this route is convenient mostly for students that live East of San Ramon Elementary. Other bike-bus routes can and should be organized in the near future, as well as, walking-buses for students who prefer not to ride a bike, or those that may live too far away, but can still be dropped off by a parent/guardian at a destination to join a walking-bus group.

Expectations

To help the ride run safely and smoothly, all riders should follow these expectations:

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Follow the rules of the road.
  • Arrive early at your chosen bike bus “stop”. Or miss the bus.
  • Once a rider joins the bike bus, they will not be left behind.
  • NO RIDING BIKES ON SCHOOL CAMPUS. PLEASE GET OFF AND WALK YOUR BIKE ONCE YOU REACH THE FRONT SIDEWALK

Riding Style

On streets and in bike lanes, we will ride together as a group. Adults will ride on the outside, closer to traffic, while children ride on the inside, closer to the edge of the street or curb.

In busier areas, such as along San Carlos Way, children may ride on the sidewalk where appropriate. Adults will help monitor traffic, call out cars approaching from behind, and watch carefully for vehicles turning across sidewalks or driveways.

Our pace will be comfortable and controlled — approximately 8 mph to help ensure the group stays together and doesn’t separate.

FAQ

What is a bike bus?

A bike bus is a coordinated group of children and adults riding bikes to school together along a set route, similar to a bus route.

Who can join?

All San Ramon students who can confidently ride up to 1 mile are welcome to join. Parents or guardians, too.

Will the bike bus actually stop at each designated “stop”?

Not exactly. The bike bus will keep moving along the route. Riders waiting at a designated “stop” should be ready to start pedaling as the group approaches.

Can riders join somewhere other than the designated “stops”?

Yes. Riders are welcome to join anywhere along the route that is convenient and safe.

How long will the ride take?

The full route should take about 10 minutes. We plan to arrive at San Ramon Elementary around 8:20 a.m.

Will the bike bus ride the same route back after school?

Yes. The parent organizers will leave San Ramon Elementary at 3:15 p.m. and lead the group back along the same route.

Important note: We will not take roll call before leaving school. Students who want to ride home with the group should be ready to depart at 3:15 p.m. Riders will gather together under the flag pole in front of the school office before departure. When riding home, students may leave the route at any point to continue home. The bike-bus leaders will remain on the planned route.
